Insert Coin(s) is the most awesome bar I have ever been to. After being introduced to it by Jarod DeAnda earlier this year during Formula DRIFT Vegas, I had to go back for more. After the events that transpired on this night, I don’t think I’ll ever hang out on the Strip again. Insert Coin(s) is where it’s at. Fact!
Can you believe I’ve been to Vegas five times now, and this was my first time seeing the Fremont Street Experience?!? They actually had a giant QR code as part of the video light show! I tried to scan it but it was moving too fast for me. Leann McGlasson from OMGDrift and her awesome race-car driving boyfriend Brad at my side, I headed towards Insert Coin(s).
Here’s Brad laying the smackdown on Leann at Virtua Fighter.
Insert Coin(s) has some of my all-time favorite video games like House of the Dead, Virtua Fighter, Shinobi, and the 4-player Simpsons game. I spent many a 12-year-old night playing those games at my local pizza parlor.
When you sit down at the bar, you look up to find a long line of flat-screen monitors playing all your favorite console games. When ordering a drink, you can ask the bartender for a controller, then it’s game on!
Hmmm, Dead Guy Ale and Call of Duty, Rum and Coke and Forza 4, or Guiness and Ken Block’s Dirt? Jason the bartender serves ’em all.
As you venture farther back in the bar you find a lot of people dancing and enjoying themselves, and something that surprised me a bit, flocks of super hot lesbians. Wow.
Before long, the BBoys showed up. Breakdancing is one of my favorite things in the world to shoot because of gravity defying stunts the guys pull. Even more impressive is that they’re using nothing but their bodies as propulsion. It’s all about gyroscopics and momentum, man!
Soon after the BBoyism started, an announcement was made that Paria B the rapper and her DJ, DJ Duwop, were going to be doing a set.
LB: What are some of your influences?
Paria B: Tupac, Lauren Hill, Immortal Technique, all the way to TI, Twista… just a little bit of everything.
LB: Where are you from?
Paria B: I’m originally from Kansas City, Missouri, but as far as the whole hip hop game goes, I definitely learned it in Vegas. I’ve been here seven years now.
LB: What’s it like in this day and age to be a female rockin’ the mic?
Paria B: Man, it’s a good time, it’s always a good time when you can hang with the boys and sometimes be better than the boys, know what I mean? They show me love, and as a woman I get the respect I deserve, so I love doing it. Definitely.
LB: What kind of gigs do you usually play?
Paria B: The set tonight was kinda freestyle because of the mic situation, and then the music cut off.
LB: I saw you rocking two mics, that was awesome.
Paria B: Right? Sometimes I have a little voice. I was like “I need both mics up in here.” But naw, I play at the House of Blues, open up for Talib Kweli, Ice-T, Killa Priest, Bizzy Bone, a little of everything.
LB: You ever travel?
Paria B: Yeah, I’m pretty frequent in LA.
LB: How about the Bay?
Paria B: Actually yeah, I’m supposed to have something going in San Diego in December.
LB: No, no, no…San Francisco Bay.
Paria B: This is how you can tell I’m not too familiar with Cali! Haha!
LB: Where can we see Paria B play next?
Paria B: First Friday of the month here at Insert Coin(s)!
Just then, a drunk guy approaches…
Paria: Hey Lor, you good? You look faded, bro.
Lor (slurring): I need you to take me inside.
Paria: I can’t dog, you’re too drunk.
Lor: No I’m not, just tell ’em I’m with you!
LB: What do you think about Insert Coin(s)?
Paria B: It’s dope. The whole theme is sick, and it’s the first place I’ve ever seen like this. Just look at the line to get in! They’re doing something fresh for downtown, for sure.
LB: Where can we find the latest Paria B record?
www.reverbnation.com/pariab also @paria_b on twitter. Holla!
And before I knew it, my epic night at Insert Coin(s) was over. Some friends gave me a ride back to the hotel, and on the way up the elevator I ran into Kevin the maintenance guy. I told him I was damn proud of him for having a hotel that wasn’t afraid to label the 13th floor. Props to the Mandalay.
