From the Archives ● 1981 Part 1: New York

I got ahold of a photo album that belonged to my uncle Chas and chronicled his 1981 trips to New York, France, and San Francsico with his partner Jacques. Chas died in 1991 so this series is more for preservation than storytelling, though it does have some adventure behind it. I’ll try my best to identify the subjects of the photos.

From the Empire State Building looking east over Tudor City and the East River into Queens. Those smokestacks are gone now. To the left of them in the center of the photo is the United Nations building and in the upper left is Roosevelt Island and the Queensboro Bridge.

Statue of Prometheus, the titan who stole fire from Zeus to give it to man, in the Lower Plaza at Rockefeller Center.

The Empire State Building as seen from 5th Avenue between 39th and 40th Streets. You can only see the spire from this spot today, as the Setai Fifth Avenue hotel and 425 Fifth Avenue now block the view of the building itself.

Looking south on the Avenue of the Americas between 49th and 50th Streets.

Not sure about this one.

Radio City Music Hall, on the corner of the Avenue of the Americas and 50th Street.

Jacques posing in front of Prometheus.

Little help?

Looking south from the Empire State building over Madison Square and the New York Life Building, New York Merchandise Mart, and the Metropolitan Life Tower, which was the tallest building in the world from 1909 to 1913. What appears to be a river in the background is actually 4th Avenue.

Carnegie Hall’s 57th Street facade. The main entrance is around the corner on 7th Avenue.

Looking northeast from the Empire State Building with the Pan-Am (now Met Life) Building and Chrysler Building dominating the view. The Queensboro Bridge crosses into Queens in the background.

A Closer look at Radio City Music Hall.

Chas posing with Prometheus and the plaque outlining John D. Rockefeller, Jr.’s guiding principles.

That does it for New York. Next stop: Paris.
