Okay, while not actually in 2012, my trip to the Hoh Rainforest on the Olympic Peninsula happened after my Best of 2011 post. How could I not include this awesome tree?

The Occupy movement was still going strong in January so Geoff, Joe, and I went to go check out the “Fuck the Police” protest that was going on in Oakland. The police were not happy when this banner was unrolled.

The police were even less happy when this guy lit an American flag on fire. Tensions were rising, and whenever there’s a risk of violence I always wonder if it’s worth being where I could get hurt or my camera broken or stolen.

I was in Dallas for a week so I wanted to find a vantage point to shoot the skyline. It just so happened I was there during a lighting storm.

My in-laws are in Redding, California, so I stop by to visit sometimes. This time I went over to the locally famous Sundial Bridge to try for some abstract shots.

Joe and I climbed Mission Peak in Fremont, California. We stayed at the summit til sunset so it was dark before we got all the way back down. The moon peeked over the hillside as we were descending, but something was in front of it. Joe said “What’s that thing?? A cow?” Sure enough, it was. It took me a few exposures to get the settings right, and the cow turned away from us after this shot. Super lucky.

The afternoon light in Long Beach is so yellow that it seems surreal at times. Throw some smoke in the mix and who knows what you’ll get?

Pointed downwards, the fisheye gives an artificial but believable curve to the horizon, making New York appear to cover the entire planet.

The west end of the Manhattan Bridge offers an interesting view of the city. Grafitti-covered rooftops in the Two Bridges neighborhood contrast with the skyscrapers and new World Trade Center in the Financial District.

By New Jersey, Daigo Saito was the undisputed King of Proximity. It was always thrilling to see how close he could get to his opponent, especially when he battled Conrad Grunewald, whom he would meet in four rounds this season.

In the middle of “traveling season” we actually had the chance to shoot a round of the Touchstone Rope Series. I was excited to hang out at the top of a wall shooting competitors as they climbed up next to my line.

After Odi Bakchis crashed his S14 during Formula D Vegas practice, he broke down in tears. He was tenth in points going into this event with two rounds to go, so losing his car meant losing his last chances at climbing the standings, not to mention the financial setback of having to build a new car before Irwindale. It was difficult to shoot but it had to be done.

We got invited to a private day at Thunderhill to help test out a new mobile phone app called Rage Tank that keeps track of your lap times and lets you analyze your line and stuff like that. During lunch I got to hang out the trunk of a car and shoot Geoff driving this awesome Model T for a lap. If you look close, you can see him shooting me with his phone.

In September I went back to Washington for the final round of the Rally America national championship. Ken Block didn’t attend the Oregon Trail Rally so I was excited to finally see him in action at Olympus. Shooting rally is similar to shooting drifting, since both sports feature clouds following the cars as they slide through the turns.

Fleet Week comes to San Francisco every year, but I’d never been to it before. This year Joe and I decided to check it out. Joe shot from Fort Mason and I shot from Treasure Island. I was hoping for a shot of the Blue Angels passing in front of the SF skyline, and what do you know? I got it.

California’s Highway 1 has some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. Mountains drop straight into the ocean for most of its length and there are thousands of coves and inlets along the way.

During practice at Irwindale, I was hanging through a photo hole with my fisheye when Tony Angelo almost killed me by crashing into the wall right where I was. There was red fiberglass by my feet and coolant on my camera.

2011 Formula D champ Dai Yoshihara still had a shot at the 2012 title until his run against Kyle Mohan at Irwindale. I was waiting at the finish so I could get Dai’s reaction to the judges’ call, and I made sure to frame Mohan’s number panel through Dai’s window. Dai slumped a little when he heard the news, and the lighting was perfect.
