Just a week after Formula D held its second round of competition, it was time for Golden Gate Drift ProAm to do the same. Chris Mills, Jeff Wolfson, and Joe Amies came back to defend their top positions in the standings, while other drivers came back to see if they could take their spots. A few new drivers came out to play, including three from SoCal. This was shaping up to be a good competition!

…or maybe not. This particular course layout was a little on the treacherous side. Drivers started in the infield below Turn 3 and crossed the track, initiated as they got onto the Turn 1 bank, and, if they were lucky, drifted around the bank, manjied the back straight, drifted the the Turn 3-4 bank, dipped into the infield X and came back out onto the front straight counter-course. If they weren’t lucky they initiated into the Turn 1 bank and smacked the wall. Julian Dumay, Alveen Gideon, Dominic Truhett, and Geoff Roark all took themselves out of the competition with crash damage.

Alveen was a favorite to win this round, as he could always drive the piss out of his red Hachi but could never keep up when following in tandem. Now with Dustin Jenks’s old F20-powered Hachi it seemed like his time to shine. Maybe next time.

Everyone wanted to see Matt Madrigali do well at Round 2. After a Great 8 loss to eventual winner Chris Mills in Round 1, he needed redemption. He also needed photos with his bumper on, but alas! he got neither at this round. Matt’s strut bar rubbed/bashed against his top-feed fuel rail too many times and broke it, rendering the car undrivable. It’s always the little stuff that causes the most trouble.

Josh McGuire was hungry for points after not qualifying in Round 1. With his mean new livery he qualified fifth.

Joe Farasati got acquainted with the wall in practice, but not enough to take him out of the running. He came out with a fourth place qualifying run.

Jeff Wolfson stayed off the wall and qualified third.

Matt Coffman pulled off a 2nd-place qualifying run.

And the winner of Round 1, Chris Mills, proved he’s still in it to win it with the best qualifying run of the day.

Worth mentioning is newcomer Dave Forman. Coming from Top Drift with an LS-powered RWD Subaru wagon covered in stickers, everyone wondered what this guy was all about. He was about a foot off Jeff Wolfson’s bumper in practice, that’s all I know. Forman qualified seventh.

Because of the crashes, mechanical problems, and a few double 0′s, only 12 drivers qualified. That meant the top four drivers would get bye runs into the Great 8. What an easy way to get points!

The first real battle of the day might as well have been a bye run for Josh Sher, as Donovan Brockway went into the wall and broke an axle.

Josh McGuire had a good run but Wais Samad threw a wrench in his ProAm plans this season.

Forman got a chance to show his stuff to Ty Milner and the rest of NorCal, and earned himself a spot in the Great 8.

Faruk Kugay was doing okay against Nick Bayati until…

…he went to visit the safety guys in the middle of his lead run, thus ending the “Shortest Top 16 Ever™.”

Mills made easy work of a wobbly Josh Sher in the Great 8.

Try as he might, Farasati and his Supra couldn’t top Wais Samad and his 240.

Matt Coffman stuck to Dave Forman all around the track, but when Forman slowed down coming out of Turn 4, Coffman lifted and spun.

Jeff Wolfson had it in the bag until he cut through the dirt in the infield on his chase run. Bayati was in the Final Four!

Mills and Samad squared off for the first battle of the Final Four. It was a clean fight and Mills came out on top with a second podium guaranteed.

Bayati took Forman on a fantastic voyage but spun when they changed places. Forman would face Mills in the Final Battle.

But first Bayati had his chance to be in front of a spinning opponent as Samad threw it into the dirt.

It all came down to Mills and Forman. Since Forman didn’t come to Round 1, Mills would keep the series lead regardless of the outcome of this battle.

I’m sure it was fun battling a guy willing to drive so close.

Mills wasn’t slacking though. Having confidence in your opponent’s abilities allows for closer tandems. It was too close to call so the judges called for a One More Time!

Forman repeated his follow run and was able to open a gap on his second lead run. Mills gave it all he could but it wasn’t enough.

I think there needs to be a real podium so the drivers don’t run around all over the place when they spray each other. That would be handy. Hint hint.

Even with his win, Dave Forman is down in 9th place overall. Matt Coffman moved from 8th to 4th, Nick Bayati rocketed from 14th all the way to 3rd, and Wolfson and Mills stayed put in 2nd and 1st respectively. Mills is ahead of Wolfson by 37 points, and 30 more separate Wolfson from Bayati, but after that the points race is pretty tight.

Almost every stop on the Formula DRIFT tour features a Hellaflush Slammed Society car show, put on by our friends at Fatlace. We rarely cover car shows because none of our staff are enamored by them, and as you know if you’ve read our About LB page, we only cover stuff that we like. Here, blasterfans, is a rare exception wherein we decided to cover this event just for you, the fans. We hope you enjoy these photos!

Hellaflush has been a big name in car shows since their introduction to the Formula DRIFT paddock in 2010.

Here’s a really clean Mazda RX-7 FC that Joe liked.

Here’s a really clean Honda S2000 repping some JimmyUp love all the way in Georgia. I think it’s looks could be vastly improved with deeper wheels, especially the fronts.

Here’s the airbag crew

…lead by a slammed vintage Mercedes-Benz.

I wonder if the previous owner died in the car? There’s obviously a whole lot of stink to cover up!

See, S2000 guy? This is what I’m talking about. The wheels on this Acura were so wide he needed 45° of negative camber just to clear the wheel wells. That’s dedication.

I really liked the race-inspired look of this Mazda Miata, but what was it doing in a car show? This car belongs on a track!

I especially like the white Work Meister S1s it’s sporting.

I understand the general theory behind show cars, but this Lexus GS puzzled me just a bit.

I like the Junction Produce VIP goodies, like the curtains and cupholders and the Gintsuna knot which is symbolic of the ancient Japanese Danjiri Matsuri… but why does it have A-pillar gauges? To me, A-pillar gauges say “race car” and all the other stuff says “high-end luxury.” Why try to mix the two?

Have you ever seen a fast car with a suede trunk and molded subwoofer boxes? Well kids, there’s a first time for everything.

In conclusion, I left the Slammed Society show more puzzled about show cars than when I entered. Some of these cars are truly works of art, but many leave me with a big question mark in my head. What do you think about show cars?

As an addition to our usual event coverage, I’ve been thinking lately about doing something a little different. We usually leave the track with tons for photos that don’t ever relate to an actual story and don’t ever get used. So I’ve decided to make this the first of my “Photo Dump” posts where I pour all my unused photos here for you guys to enjoy. Also, please leave feedback and let us know what you want to see in future Photo Dump posts, whether be it photos of the track, behind the scenes, or anything. Enjoy!

Who could have guessed that Road Atlanta would hold such a prestigious place in American drifting history? For sure the South is a hotbed of car culture and racing activity, but most Japanese influence is in Los Angeles and the rest of the West Coast. Eventual FD founders Jim Liaw and Ryan Sage were involved with D1 coming to Irwindale in 2003 so when it came time to start the US’s own professional drifting series in 2004, where would it make sense to hold the first event?

You guessed it. Road Atlanta was the place where the new series would set its first roots. In 2004 it was a hard sale to convince venues that drifting was the next big thing but Road Atlanta was on board since the beginning. There were only four rounds that year, and aside from Atlanta, only Irwindale was part of the original schedule. Not counting the demo in 2005, Formula D didn’t even have a full-on event at Long Beach until 2006!

So here we are back at Road Atlanta for the 10th time. These are arguably the best drift fans in the country, or at least the drunkest.

Chris Forsberg is one of a handful of guys who has been to every round of FD since that first Atlanta event in 2004. For a few other drivers, this was their first round of FD ever. It was time to put them all to the test.

Top 32 although dry was a bit of a wash. A great many notable drivers were unable to qualify due to mechanical issues, so the philosophy of the tandem bracket arrangement worked perfectly aside from a few battles. Field beat Ward, Gittin beat Briggs, Wang beat Ovcharik, Powers beat Parsons, yawn.

Just when I thought things couldn’t get more predictable, the first run of the Danny George & Ryan Tuerck battle happened. I had never seen Danny drift so well in the Miata! I excitedly anticipated his follow run, but after the initiation my eyes rolled back in my head, my jaw dropped, and my brain started leaking out of my ear. Total meltdown. In the end, a judgement was made that Danny George had caused the spin by tapping the left rear of Tuerck’s car. When we asked Tuerck what happened after the event, he said “When Danny tapped me, I was already at full opposite lock so I had no extra angle to save myself from the spin.” I guess those who say the FR-S has weak angle are correct…

Another highlight from Top 32 was when Conrad Grunewald beat Dai Yoshihara, thus finishing off his hopes of a perfect season. Conrad and Dai had only faced off once before, but Conrad beat him then (Sonoma ’07) and he beat him now. Very impressive considering that Dai has competed in over twice as many battles as Conrad, and has over thrice as many battle victories.

As Top 32 ended and we segued into the break, the skies opened up and gave the whole place a good soaking. To win in the wet opening runs of Top 16 one would need the technical prowess and steely resolve of a Norwegian Ice Drifter.

Fortunately, the first battle was between two drivers whose names are synonymous with Norwegian Ice Drifting: Aasbø and Moen. I wish I could’ve seen the look of disbelief on the judges faces when the two Vikings manjied down the hill into the first initiation. After Kenny Moen took a gravel nap, the judges voted unanimously that Aasbø would move on to the Great 8.

In the battle of Matt Field and Vaughn Gittin Jr, Vaughn straightened a few times and Matt went one wheel off on the entry. With roles reversed, Vaughn pulled a larger gap but it was only good enough to go one more time. In their OMT battle, Field went one wheel off on the entry again but had a sizable gap on Gittin, which Gittin decreased substantially by the end of the run. On the second run, Field took out the entry clipping point, and was unable to close the gap to Gittin, giving Vaughn the unanimous victory. This was Matt’s 3rd time losing a battle to Vaughn. Don’t worry Matt, you’ll get him one day!

Forrest Wang put up an excellent fight against reigning champion Daigo Saito. Wang held close proximity on his follow run, even tapping Saito slightly in the horseshoe!

On his lead run, Wang went extra hard but gave Daigo the win by spinning in the off-camber section of the horseshoe. When we asked Wang what happened afterwards, he commented “I just got too antsy man, too pumped. I tried to save the car from spinning while also keeping the revs and smoke up, but it wasn’t enough and I lost it.”

Conrad and Essa had a close battle. Essa was looking good all weekend but seemed to always throw too much angle on the entry turn, which is good for qualifying, but not on a follow run. Fortunately for Essa, Conrad has the same issue, and parked it slightly on his lead initiation, giving Essa the unanimous win.

As the rain picked up one final time, JTP and Ryan Tuerck both spun, giving them a chance to go one more time. On the OMT, Justin Pawlak touched the painted rumble strips on the outside of the track entering the horseshoe, and spun so violently he almost hit Tuerck with the rear of his car! Tuerck took the win unanimously.

Just as I had picked my brains out of the red Georgia clay and re-installed them in my head, the most spectacular thing I have ever seen at a drift event happened right before my eyes. In the opening battle of the great 8, Vaughn Gittin Jr. made a huge mistake on the initiation, causing him to slam into the Scion tC of Fredric Aasbø and basically climb the fender like a 4×4. Astonishingly, both cars began drifting again without even coming to a stop!

I was amazed to see the lack of damage on the left front of Aasbø’s car considering the impact it had taken. Bohan and I speculated that the fenders were made of magic. On the second run, Aasbø had obvious mechanical problems and scored a zero meaning that, gasp, they would be going OMT. Out went my brain again.

I think Daigo knew that all he had to do to beat Kyle Mohan was put in a consistent conservative run, and that’s exactly what happened. Daigo ran clean, and Mohan killed a clipping point, taking himself out of the final four.

Next was the battle between Mike Essa and Matt Powers. I’m sure Essa was hyped about this battle because it would be his chance for redemption after his loss to Powers at the Motegi Super Drift battle a few weeks ago at the Long Beach Grand Prix. Essa put down a solid lead, and Powers spun giving Essa the advantage. In the second run, Essa got a lot of extra angle on the initiation leaving him with a big gap to make up. He was making good progress when Matt decided to make it easy for him and leave the track in the horseshoe. Mike Essa moved on to the final four with a unanimous win-vote by the judges.

During their OMT battle, Aasbø made a mistake on his lead run, and ran a clean follow run but with less proximity than Vaughn on the previous run, giving Vaughn the unanimous win. When one disregards what happened in their first battle as the judges are supposed to, it’s easy to see why they came to the conclusion that JR won the match. However, when you consider that JR was at fault for such a serious incident it boggles the mind a bit that he could go on to win the battle.

The D-Mac & Tuerck battle was another that ended in mechanical failure after the first run. While following Darren, Ryan went two wheels off into the clay-slime, and did major suspension damage when returning to the track. So bad that his passenger-side rear wheel almost left the car by the end of the run. This solidified McNamara’s spot in the final four.

Daigo faced off with JR for the first round of the final four. Vaughn followed so closely on the first run that he hit Daigo, breaking both of his left wheels, and forcing him to call a competition time out. After his CTO, Vaughn ran a stellar lead run, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the zero he received on the first run, and Daigo won. Here’s an interesting tidbit, Judge Brian Eggert called this as a one more time, and Judges Andy Yen and Ryan Lanteigne called it as a Daigo win making this the only battle of the entire night that was not unanimously decided on.

Essa and D-Mac had a close battle, but it all came down to the entry. With Mike Essa kicking in just a little too much angle and sacrificing his speed, Darren McNamara took the win.

In the consolation battle, Essa hoped to take out JR and take his first ever Formula DRIFT podium spot. His highest previous finish was here in Atlanta back in 2010. Unfortunately it came down to the same mistake he had been making all day, an over-rotation on the entry followed by a loss of speed. JR took the final podium spot, and it was up to Daigo and D-Mac to determine the final two.

Ever since his Formula DRIFT debut, I have been told by drivers “I don’t care. If I go up against Daigo, I’m just going to hit him and take him out. F*%^ it.” It may not have been the right thing to do, but I’m glad someone finally put their money where their mouth is. Darren hit Daigo on the hill entering the horseshoe with what I can only describe as reckless abandon, and you know what? I think we all owe him a gigantic high-five. It might not have won him the event, but he will certainly go down in history as the guy who violently smashed into Daigo Saito… just because.

So where are we now? As the only driver with two podium finishes this season, Vaughn Gittin, Jr. has taken over the points lead. Daigo climbed into second with D-Mac only five points behind in third. Dai Yoshihara fell back to fifth as Mike Essa’s fourth place finish landed him fourth in the standings as well.

After the rare occurrence in Long Beach where no rookies earned points, Nate Hamilton and Will Parsons finally stepped into the tied lead in the Rookie of the Year race. The rest of the rookies still don’t have any points.

Daigo won in Florida last season, but that was back when running over clipping points was still legal. Let’s see if he can keep up his momentum.

Road Atlanta is one of my favorite tracks to shoot. It was built in 1969 in the forested hills of rural Hall County so it has lots of natural elevation changes and even more trees. The neatly manicured lawns, sand traps, and white and forest green berms add to the beauty as well. The humid Georgia weather produces amazing clouds that don’t hurt either. When you come to the track the first thing you see is cars coming down the hill from Turn 11 under the bridge and into the final turn, Turn 12. If that scene doesn’t impress you on your first visit, you must not be a race fan.

Many tracks are called “Such and Such Raceway Park” but Road Atlanta could easily pass for an actual park. Many of the infield access roads offer no view of the track whatsoever, but abound in lawns and trees.

Here and there you can pop out of the trees and watch some racing.

I took an infrequently-traveled path which led me across a muddy creek. It wasn’t that far to jump across but it sure was slippery on the other side…

There are all kinds of hidden hillside vantage points.

The Esses are one of the funnest parts of the track to watch. It might look like a downhill section to a flat section in photos, but really the turn next to the Visual Studio billboard is the low point and the flag station is the about same elevation as the crest in the distance.

There are enough facilities spread around the infield to keep almost everyone happy. They’re pretty nice too, as would be expected of a track that hosts prestigious races like American Le Mans.

At the far end of the infield is the skidpad, where drivers test lateral acceleration or just mess around.

The back straight is fairly long at just over 3/4 mile, if you don’t count Turns 8 and 9 as turns.

It has some slight rises and dips too. There used to be a taller crest that could cause cars to lose enough downforce to flip over. Apparently everyone got tired of that so the crest was flattened in 2001.

Alongside the back straight is the RV parking area and some more access roads through the woods.

It feels like it might as well be the wilderness instead of a huge race track.
At the end of the back straight the track drops down into the Turn 10 complex. The track used to go straight from the top of the tunnel on the right to under the bridge on the left, but the chicane (Turn 10A) was added in the late ’90s by new owner Don Panoz in order for the track to meet FIA standards.

10,000-capacity terrace seating was also built around the Turn 10 complete at the same time. The whole area is like a stadium, except instead of just sitting in a hard plastic chair or on an aluminum bench, fans can bring their own lawn chairs, canopies, coolers, and whatever else.

In the camping area people even bring BBQ’s and have cookouts. See? This place is more like a park than a track.

In 2004 the track added the Horseshoe at the exit of Turn 10A to create the Formula D course. Formula D switched course configurations last year but they still use the Horseshoe.

The original paddock is on the outside of the front straight, while on the inside of the front straight is the new paddock. It was added in the same upgrade frenzy as the chicane, and this is where Formula D’s teams set up their pits. In the morning the paddock will be packed with trailers and race cars, and a fair amount of fans, though the real chaos won’t come until Saturday.

It’s been a year now since Alex and I started shooting rally. It was right here in the foothills of Mt. Hood where our adventure began and it felt great to be back to do it again. I’d been wanting to shoot Rally America for years, ever since I was doing vinyl work for Works Motorsports’s driver Lars Wolfe. Finally I had the chance so I grabbed it with both hands. By this time last year I already had tons of experience as a motorsports photographer: I’d been shooting Formula D for years and I’d been to countless local drift events, autocrosses, and trackdays, plus the occasional big race like Indycar, ALMS and the 25 Hours of Thunderhill. I’d shot at big prestigious tracks, street courses, ovals, and club racing tracks, and all of that experience combined barely prepared me for the chaos-fest that is rally.

The Oregon Trail Rally is a three-day event if you don’t count the pre-race days when the teams do their recce or the parc expose in downtown Portland. When the racing finally started on Friday night at Portland International Raceway, most of the people involved had already been in town for a week. Alex and I knew we would wear ourselves out if we tried to cover everything, so we went to PIR a few hours before the first stage.

I feel like most people don’t even know Rally America exists, and that’s a shame. I blame Americans’ lack of interest in racing in general. Subaru has had a factory team in Rally America since it was still SCCA Pro Rally, and its drivers (Patrick Richard, Travis Pastrana, and David Higgins) have been champions every year but one.

Ken Block’s popularity is bringing a lot of much-needed attention to the series, so you can’t blame Rally America’s PR crew for milking his presence for all it’s worth. Along with Antoine L’Estage (Rally America’s only non-Subaru champion) Block is keeping David Higgins on his toes, making the race for this year’s championship exciting.

Scion Racing is another factory team. Andrew Comrie-Picard used to drive the NOS Energy Drink Mitsubishi Evo but joined Scion Racing when they entered the series in 2011. He’s the defending 2WD Champion and in the lead again this season.

Most teams, however, are much more grassroots. In many cases the cars are built by the driver and co-driver and their friends, and those same friends are the crew at each round. A handful of these teams do the national tour, but most are regional competitors. Each national round is also a round of the local regional series, but from a regional driver’s point of view, one round from their series is huge and has all the national teams competing in it. To keep things fair, the scoring is kept separate.

Mt. Hood can be seen from almost every stage and service area of the Oregon Trail Rally. It’s about 50 miles east of Portland.

Matt Coffman is one of those local guys. I first met him when a bunch of us Norcal guys went to a Drift Evolution event in Medford. That exposure prompted him to start running in our Formula D ProAm series. Last year he entered the Olympus Rally as his first rally event.

Ken Block lost a wheel partway through Stage 3 and sparked his way through the rest of the course. Since there was no service until after the next stage, he ran all of Stage 4 in the same condition. He could have just quit and prevented damage to his brake rotor and suspension arms, but he had spares of that stuff so he kept on pushing. I’d say it was worth staying in the race since he finished 2nd overall.

After Stage 4 the mechanics not only had to repair or replace anything that got damaged, but many teams were running a tarmac suspension setup that needed to be swapped out. The four stages at PIR were partially on the track so it wouldn’t make sense to run an exclusively dirt and gravel setup.

Antoine L’Estage was debuting his newly rented WRC Lancer at Oregon Trail. Hopefully his crew got plenty of practice taking it apart and putting it back together before hand.

This is where shooting rally starts to get crazy. After Friday night service at PIR, all the teams packed up and moved out. On Saturday morning, they set up an entirely new service area 76 miles east at the Hood River County Fairgrounds in Odell.

The cars lined up for another Parc Expose for all the fans who couldn’t make it out to PIR the night before. Actually I wonder how many people are hardcore enough to go to both.

Unlike the PIR stages, the stages on Saturday were not at the fairgrounds. To shoot Stage 5, we had to drive 7 miles further south on Highway 35 and then hike another mile up a steep dirt road. Don’t get me wrong, it’s totally worth the effort.

Mt. Hood is only 15 miles south of this point.

There was no service until after Stage 7, so we had to carefully plan out what we wanted to shoot and figure out if we had time to shoot everything. When a team finished Stage 5 they would go straight to Stage 6, which meant the fast cars already finishing 6 and going to Stage 7 while we were still shooting Stage 5. If we wanted to shoot Stage 7 at all, we could have only stayed at Stage 5 for the first five or so cars, then run back down the road (which was now an active stage and way too dangerous to be on) then drive 11 miles back up Highway 35 and up the side of Fir Mountain. We elected to stay a little longer at Stage 5 and then just go back to Odell for service.

We checked out what everyone was doing. I had no idea John Reed’s AE86 had a Beams motor in it.

The teams don’t refuel in their own pit space. Instead there’s a fueling area with a tarp protecting the grass. When they’re done with service they all line up and fuel in order, five at a time.

It’s the perfect opportunity to shove your camera in a driver’s face.

Stages 8, 9, and 10 were the same as 5, 6, and 7, so our plan was to catch the transit between 8 and 9 and then make the long drive to Stage 10. It’s so awesome to see race cars on public roads.

We made it to Stage 10 just in time. It’s always good to see a crowd cheering and yelling and generally going nuts.

Block was doing a good job keeping up with Higgins. After his problems at Sno*Drift and 100 Acre Wood he needed a solid finish.

L’Estage didn’t come around this turn but we didn’t know why. Later we learned that he had crashed pretty hard on Stage 9, but luckily he and Nathalie Richard are both okay.

I kept noticing a car toward the front of a pack I’d never seen before. It turns out it was Rifat Sungkar of Indonesia, and not only was he killing it in the rally, he’s also been on the podium in Formula D Asia.

Victor Bartosek’s ’83 Audi is one of my favorite cars to watch and is one of the reasons I like to stay on stage for the entire field instead of just moving on after the fast guys go by.

After Stage 10 we went back to Odell for drinks and snacks while the cars were in service again, and then went down to shoot Stage 11, which was on the same road as Stages 6 and 9 but now being run in the opposite direction.

We were hanging out at the hairpin right at the finish line and kept getting showered with dust and gravel. Luckily there was sort of a trench to hide in.

This is why you need dust-resistant gear. The lens now looks as good as new and still works perfectly, in case you’re wondering.

While we were finishing up Stage 11, the fast cars were finishing up Stage 12, so after that we made the 13 mile drive to Hood River for the block party at Double Mountain Brewery and Taproom. What a cool place!

We met plenty of interesting characters.

They were talking a big pizza game at Double Mountain. 700º coal oven? Rivaling the pizza in New Haven, the self-proclaimed pizza capital? We put those claims to the test, and I must say this is the closest thing to authentic New York Pizza I’ve had outside of Lombardi’s in Little Italy.

The next parc expose and service area was in the Wild West town of Dufur, 37 miles east of Hood River. I’m really glad I’m not one of the guys who has to set up and tear down pit spaces constantly.

Block’s wheels were showing some signs of wear.

We drove 14 miles from Dufur to the spectator area at Stage 14 and then hiked most of another mile to the jump.

Block had the best jump of the day, which I can’t say I was surprised about.

ACP’s xD got pretty decent air as well, and it only has half the drive wheels!

A year ago, Alex and I were the only full-time Formula D photo or video guys at the rally. I’m happy to see guys like Loren Haleston and Sully coming out now.

We made a 14 mile drive to a different part of the same stage and waited for it to become Stage 16. A jump and a water crossing on the same stage! It’s almost like they plan this stuff.

While Higgins plowed right through the middle, Block went way to the inside to avoid as much water as possible. Look how close he is to the GoPro!

Evan Cline hit the water just right to completely soak Alex, who was up close getting wide shots.

Brenten Kelley sucked water into his intake and almost ruined his car. Rally is fun but not when you almost have problems like that!

There wasn’t enough time to hit Stage 17, which was the last stage of the rally, so we made the 42 mile drive back to Odell for the podium. The top cars had to get weighed to make sure they hadn’t been cheating.

Higgins came out on top again, but Block, in his first completed rally of the season, was only two minutes slower. Rifat Sungkar had a hell of a debut, finishing third, seven minutes behind Block.

Evan Cline made it all the way back to Odell with only three wheels.

Higgins is still leading the series overall, with L’Estage still in second even after his crash. Evan Cline slid into third and Block is way down in 11th. Though if he can keep up this momentum we should see Block climbing the leaderboard rapidly!

The Long Beach Grand Prix is a race weekend I look forward to every year, though it’s easily one of the most exhausting events from a photographer’s standpoint. The 24/25 hour races certainly take their toll, especially if you can manage to stay awake through the whole thing, but the LBGP’s wacky schedule and sheer number of races, qualifying sessions, and practice sessions crammed into three days is enough to make even the toughest photographer want to go puke in the bushes.

We had a parking pass to the garage inside the venue, so that meant we had to get there before they closed the entrances and moved the walls into racetrack mode. For how that all works check out my previous story about the Long Beach Street Course. Anyway, getting there by 6am meant getting up at 4:45am. That’s not super early the first day you do it, but there are two more days of this stuff. The first on-track activity of the day was American LeMans practice at 7:30, so at least we had plenty of time to get coffee, attend the media meeting, and get our desks set up in the media center.

And then it was time to shoot! This was my first time seeing the new Viper. Eric got to shoot them at Mid-Ohio when they debuted last year though. Lucky guy.

Pit stops are always fun to see. My credential was good for the ALMS pits, but I didn’t bother getting the special vest and I didn’t have a firesuit anyway. I figured a few shots during this first practice session would be enough.

I’m glad I got these when I did, because even though I shot them from outside the pits themselves, the track marshal kicked me out of this spot when I went back later!

I was digging the low morning sun so I moved around to get to as many locations as I could before it got too boring.

I wish the Audis would come play at the shorter races like Long Beach. I’ll have to make it to one of the enduros one of these days.

In between sessions, they have “VIP on track activities” where stock Toyotas zip around the track, giving ride-alongs to VIP’s or something. I knew I had to conserve my energy so I took a break until Indycar practice started at 10:30.

Who knew Takuma Sato would win this year’s race? I sure didn’t, but I made sure to shoot everybody just in case.

After Indycar practice was practice for the celebrity race, then Indy Lights, more VIP on track activities, more Indycar practice, celebrity qualifying, then finally World Challenge practice at 4:15. All that other stuff meant it was lunch time and time to unload and sort photos, and maybe post one or two before heading out again. GMG came hard this year, with six cars in World Challenge, though they were absent from ALMS. James Sofronas himself was piloting the #14 R8 and gearing up for a stellar weekend.

The Cadillacs are at least twice as loud as the other cars. I don’t get it.

Lou Gigliotti broke his transmission. Luckily it was a stock one and easy enough to swap.

At 5:00 it was time for ALMS qualifying. Looking through my viewfinder I kept thinking the black BMW had blue painter’s tape on its fender, the way track day guys cover their front bumpers and headlights to protect against rock chips. Silly me!

I like this year’s BMW’s a lot. Last year’s M3 GT’s were cool but the Z4 GTE’s are super sleek.

I love how squashed the GT cars are. I don’t care what body kit you get for your Corvette, unless you raise the suspension pick up points and wheel arches several inches it won’t look even close to this cool.

Dang, that is a lot of news equipment. This event must be important! How does that tall pole even fit in the van? It doesn’t even fit in the photo!

You can never go wrong with Ferrari. Should I say it? Here I go. More than you can afford, pal.

If this was a night race and the Ferris wheel was lit up…oh man, what a great photo spot this would be.

If you couldn’t tell, I love shooting into the sun. Backlight and shadows make every car look cool.

Usually the day would be over now, but at 7pm it was time for Super Drift Challenge practice. In previous years the drifting was simply a team drift competition and it was just another exhibition crammed between all those practice and qualifying sessions, but this year it was a standard tandem elimination competition. And there was a big prize. $15,000 for first place if I’m not mistaken.

16 drivers who were still in SoCal after Round 1 came for a chance to get the prize or at least shake out the last of the pre-season bugs before heading over to Atlanta. This was also the first time anything happened here at night under the lights. The backlit smoke looked super cool.

Qualifying started at 7:45 and everyone was either doing awesome or breaking their cars. Not everyone got to run in qualifying but since there were only 16 drivers they were all going to be in the main event anyway. Qualifying wrapped up by 9 and we packed up and left the track around 9:30. After the drive back to Larry’s, getting dinner, unloading cards, and taking showers, that left three hours for sleeping before we got to do it all over again.

On Saturday we got to the track just as early as the day before, and then I headed out to shoot World Challenge practice at 7:30. Right outside the media center is basically a tunnel and the cars seem three times as loud as normal. I couldn’t stand to be there without hearing protection for more than one lap, and I can usually put with with pretty loud cars.

I mentioned I like shooting into the sun, right? When else can you get killer shadows like that?

The GT class had qualifying during this session but the other classes didn’t qualify until the next morning.

James Sofronas took the pole position.

I’ve never seen so many matching R8′s. This is the reason race cars have numbers.

At 8:30 it was time for Indy Lights practice so I headed back to the media center to unload and get something to drink. Next was more VIP on track activities, Indycar practice, the celebrity race, Indy Lights Qualifying, Indycar qualifying, even more VIP on track activities, and finally the ALMS race. Larry told everyone not to look as he changed into his firesuit but my camera looked. Naughty camera.

Alex and I pretty much stuck together for the first half of the ALMS race. First we went to Turns 1 and 2.

We saw Randy Johnson shooting at Turn 3. Holy moly this guy is tall. At 6-foot-10 he’s even taller than Rob Primo! He shoots the Grand Prix every year. It’s weird that he shoots left-eyed, but I bet he doesn’t get nose smudges all over his screen.

We kept walking along the track and hit Turn 4 for a sec.

And then Turn 5.

At most turns you can get at least two views, which is handy for mixing things up.

We skipped Turns 6 and 7 and went all the way to 8, where we waited through endless yellow-flag laps before the racing resumed. Maybe Johannes Van Overbeek got a little excited watching the drifting the night before.

On the back straight we got treated to some awesome sun flares and skyscraper backdrops.

The light at the end of the race at Turn 9 is always the best. Long Beach has amazing yellow light just before sundown. Bill Auberlen and Maxime Martin ended up winning in GT class in the black BMW, after starting 17th on the grid. That’s not a bad race at all! Klaus Graf and Lucas Luhr won P1 in the Muscle Milk HPD.

After ALMS was over I rushed back to the media center to change some of my gear, and most importantly grab my clear drop-in filter for my 400. I always forget it on events that go from day to night, and it’s not fun shooting at night with a polarizer. I rushed back to Turn 9 for the Super Drift Challenge, followed soon after by Alex. It’s way easier to move around when the track is cold. Crossing bridges and going the long way around things really adds up.

I guess some people thought the day was over so they dumped their cooler out and the water ran across the track. Gee, thanks a lot.

The track management is super serious about cleanup. They sent out so many trucks and workers I lost count. First it was guys with brooms and kitty litter, then came the leaf blower and finally the flame thrower. Seriously? A few donuts in a drift car would have taken care of enough of that water.

As per Murphy’s Law, the best light disappeared while they were cleaning up the water. Luckily the drifters were warming up their tires and making awesome smoke behind Luke Crowell.

And finally the drifting began, only 45 minutes late. I think I counted three practice runs before the competition started.

Jeff Jones put the Space Shuttle to shame after the driver introductions.

I don’t know what got into Mike Essa. He was laying down 100-point runs back to back to back all through practice and qualifying, and during the competition it was no different. Driving against him was like driving against a robot. You had just as good a chance as beating the house at slots.

Aasbø wasn’t doing too bad himself, but then he crashed when going against Matt Powers. I guess a Motegi-sponsored driver in a Scion at a Toyota-sponsored track would have been a little too much for the conspiracy theorists anyway.

In the end it came down to Essa and Powers. Essa continued his streak of 100-point runs so Powers did the only thing he knew how to do. He went all-in, turned up to 11, and basically went backwards into Turn 10. I’d never seen anyone do that before, and he did it so perfectly too. I wish these guys would drive like that in Formula D.

This is the face of someone who just made $15,000.

This was Powers’s first win and Essa’s and Wilkerson’s first time on the podium. Essa got a load of champagne right in the face. What a good sport.

As exciting as all that was, the water spill made the event run super late and we didn’t get out of the venue until 10:30, but with all the driving, eating, and maintenance still to do, it wouldn’t be bedtime for another three hours. We decided we could show up an hour later on Sunday, so that gave us four hours available for sleep still. 20+ hour days have never been so much fun!

The first event on Sunday was Stadium Super Trucks practice. After shooting SST at Glen Helen and shooting the Mint 400, it didn’t seem like it would be fun to shoot trucks on the street course. They set up a jump on the front straight and a jump between Turns 9 and 10 and we watched them on TV in the media center. They were actually drifting a lot, all around the track. Maybe it would have been fun after all, but I really needed to conserve energy this day. I’d already walked 20 miles in the last two days and I was planning on driving all the way back home to NorCal this night.

After SST was done, it was time for World Challenge qualifying. GT class had already qualified so this session was for everyone else.

It was a nice change for it to be cloudy in the morning. I was hoping it would stay like this all day.

I took a break, and after VIP on track activities, Indycar practice, more VIP on track activities, the Indy Lights race, the exotic car parade, and the SST exhibition race, I headed out to shoot the pre-race festivities for the Indycar race, which started at 1:40. The clouds were completely gone but at least there were skydivers.

One landed right in front of me and the other one landed between Turns 9 and 10. How fun.

Tons of spectators gathered on rooftops all over downtown Long Beach to watch the race. I wonder how the view was from up there. I wonder how much Wells Fargo was charging for admission!

After driver introductions and the Star Spangled Banner, they had a few pace laps and then it was a free-for-all for two hours.

I hadn’t shot from the parking garage by Bubba Gump yet, so I walked over there to see how it was. Pretty cool view.

On the far side, between Turns 4 and 5, there were trees with which to get artsy.

Turn 5 was tailor-made for long pans. I would have gone longer than 1/13 but I didn’t have enough ND filters!

The fountain area was pretty weird for panning and tilting. The palm tree shadows across the track were pretty interesting though.
Sato had this race under control.
The skyline across Turn 5 was pretty nice. If only this race happened three hours later, there would be awesome sunset light.

Will Power won this race last year but he didn’t even get on the podium this year.

Once Sato had the lead he just kept getting further and further ahead. He might as well have won by 100 miles. I kept thinking about Senna’s race in Monaco where he was super far in the lead and they told him to back off and be safe, and he couldn’t drive that slow so he crashed. I was hoping Sato’s guys wouldn’t tell him something like that.

Before the World Challenge race, a few drifters came out and entertained the crowd. I couldn’t believe Robot Essa was still going so hard.

At 4:30 the final race of the weekend was underway. I was so happy there was no drifting after this. I was completely drained.

Sofronas was as much of a robot as Essa. Starting in front has its obvious advantages. If you can keep it together, the win should be easy. This race is only an hour long, but while that might seem short compared to the three hour stints you see in endurance racing, all the strategy is condensed into that time as well. The race is so short there aren’t even scheduled pit stops.

Now the only place on the track I’d never shot was the start-finish line, so I made the trek over there to see the finish.

This was the most anti-climactic race I’d ever seen. The last several laps were under yellow, and you can’t pass on yellow…so Sofronas won it with probably 10 minutes to go.

After this race was over it was still going to be a little while before they moved the walls to let cars out of the venue so we chilled in the media center, unloading cards and posting photos. We finally left at 6:30, headed back to Larry’s where I grabbed my suitcase, and we got one last meal before I hit the road for another six hours. Most people hate Mondays but after shooting the Long Beach Grand Prix, Monday feels amazing.
