I was editing photos one day, and Larry Chen called me and asked, “Hey, since you have a baby now are you not going to be traveling as much?” and I replied, “Heck no, traveling is how I make money!” So then he asked if I’d want to go shoot the Mint 400 with him. Of course my answer was, “Mmm, really? Yeah, why not? Yeah.” Read more
Rally America has seven stops for their championship season and the first stop is in the northern part of Michigan in the dead of winter. You expect everything to be covered in snow and the temperatures to be cold enough to slap you in the face, and you’d be correct. What you don’t expect is to experience the same ridiculous weather at the next round of competition. But as my flight landed in St. Louis, there was news announced that the state of Missouri had declared a state of emergency from the epic snow storm that had just dumped six feet of snow. Not a problem for a seasoned Life Blaster with, I kid you not, mere days of snow driving experience. Read more
Bohan has been in my ear constantly for the past few months with pleas of making a trip to Yosemite in the winter. “Evvvveryone gets the same shots all summer, I want awesome ones with snow!” he says. Last Wednesday having just returned to the office from a different snowy expedition, I told Bohan that we should try to get the trip in soon before our schedules filled up. After a brief period of concentrated thought, we decided to leave that very night at midnight. This would allow us to catch a sunrise, a sunset, a day, and (according to the forecast) some fresh snow. All in a little less than 24 hours!
The 2013 Rally America season kicked off last week in Michigan, with 40+ teams and a myriad fans descending on the sleepy little towns of Atlanta, Lewiston, and Hillman in rural northern Michigan, turning them into bustling centers of activity. Alex Wong and I flew over to check it out. Read more
Geoff and I were at Berkeley Ironworks one day, and we spotted this guy climbing with a prosthetic leg! And not only was he climbing, he was lead climbing hard routes, which is something most whole people can’t do. Needless to say, we were duly impressed and just had to talk to him. Here’s what we found out.
I’ve been absent from the dirt bike scene for several years now, so Tuesday was not only an opportunity to take some photos of my younger brother Graeme, but a great chance for me to shake off the cobwebs and do some riding of my own!
In the small town of Stanwood, located in northwest Washington between Seattle and the Canadian border, one can find an overwhelming Scandinavian presence. Aside from the Sons of Norway hall and street names like Lindstrom and Jensen, there are a number of quirkier indications of its early settlers’ roots. One of the more obvious signs on the way through town is that of Viking Village, an old shopping plaza between the highway and Viking Way. One of the stores in Viking Village is of course the Uff Da Shoppe. Read more
It’s about that time of year again, It’s crazy looking back through this year and throwing stuff together for this “Year End” post. I checked out my post from last year and couldn’t stand anything I shot. I can only hope to hate this post as much when December rolls around in 2013. I’ll pick this up where I left off last year, right before the 25 Hours of Thunderhill. Aside from Pikes Peak, this was one of the coldest events I’ve shot. Up at 3AM on top of the hill with gusts of wind hitting me as I rolled long exposure shots. I was only wearing a t-shirt and a windbreaker, not the ideal attire for such conditions, but was a fun time none the less.
Okay, while not actually in 2012, my trip to the Hoh Rainforest on the Olympic Peninsula happened after my Best of 2011 post. How could I not include this awesome tree? Canon 5D Mark II and 17-40mm f/4 @ 17mm, f/8, 1/3s, ISO 100, tripod. Read more
We’ve been anxiously awaiting this year’s 25 Hours of Thunderhill, thinking of shots, going over ideas, planning, and waiting. But then sometimes the unexpected happens. Just a week or so before North America’s longest endurance race was set to start, Geoff got a call from NASA Race Director Jeff Mohler, to see if he’d be interested in flying to Willows with him in a Cessna. Of course Geoff wanted to do that, but he also arranged for Jeff to give Joe and me an aerial ride around the track so we could shoot photos once we got there. Read more
For 20 years, Jailhouse Rock outside of Sonora, CA was an open secret. The cliff line held some of California’s hardest routes. Climbers like Beth Rodden and Alex Honnold cut their teeth there, but access was sensitive. The approach trail ran through private property. While the landowner was supportive of climbing, he also asked that Jailhouse remain a relative secret. No guidebooks. No Internet spray. In 2011, the Access Fund and local climbers negotiated an easement with the landowner that opened a whole new era in Jailhouse climbing. Read more
After a turbulent season of cancelled events and changes in venues, the 2012 TDProAm series held its final round on Saturday. With many drivers giving up hope of earning a Formula Drift license, the field was reduced to 14 drivers who came to duke it out and see who would come out on top. There was some controversy surrounding the licenses, particulary regarding the fact that TDProAm awarded one of the four available licenses as a wildcard instead of simply giving it to the 4th place driver. But first, we’ll go over the event itself. Read more
From the clean, epoxy floors of the Lingenfelter collection, we move to a bit darker, older garage that smells of gas, oil, and grease. That sweet smell that lets you know you’re in a place that revolves around one thing: cars. To the people who visit it, it’s known only as “The Warehouse.” Read more
It’s been a while since we’ve had Video Monday, so here’s Conrad Grunewald’s Irwindale recap! He barely qualified this time. In fact, 29th is the lowest he’s ever qualified. After that he took out 4th qualifier Chris Forsberg only to faced up against Daigo Saito for the fourth time this season. Read more
