Back Where it All Started

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013
Who could have guessed that Road Atlanta would hold such a prestigious place in American drifting history? For sure the South is a hotbed of car culture and racing activity, but most Japanese influence is in Los Angeles and the rest of the West Coast. Eventual FD founders Jim Liaw and Ryan Sage were involved with D1 coming to Irwindale in 2003 so when it came time to start the US's own professional drifting series in 2004, where would it make sense to hold the first event? FD Atlanta Qualifying

Saturday, May 11th, 2013
fdatl2-1038Fredric Aasbø put an end to Daijiro Yoshihara's perfect season by claiming the #1 qualifying spot. He qualified third and finished second here last year so we know he's got it in him to perform well at this track. fdatl2-1818Fredric will meet Walker Wilkerson in the Round of 32 tomorrow. A Tour of Road Atlanta

Thursday, May 9th, 2013
fdatl-35Road Atlanta is one of my favorite tracks to shoot. It was built in 1969 in the forested hills of rural Hall County so it has lots of natural elevation changes and even more trees. The neatly manicured lawns, sand traps, and white and forest green berms add to the beauty as well. The humid Georgia weather produces amazing clouds that don't hurt either. When you come to the track the first thing you see is cars coming down the hill from Turn 11 under the bridge and into the final… Read More

Rally America Round 3: The Oregon Trail Rally

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013
otr3-354It's been a year now since Alex and I started shooting rally. It was right here in the foothills of Mt. Hood where our adventure began and it felt great to be back to do it again. I'd been wanting to shoot Rally America for years, ever since I was doing vinyl work for Works Motorsports's driver Lars Wolfe. Finally I had the chance so I grabbed it with both hands. By this time last year I already had tons of experience as a motorsports photographer: I'd been shooting Formula… Read More

A Day (or Three) at the Races

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013
lbgp1-378The Long Beach Grand Prix is a race weekend I look forward to every year, though it's easily one of the most exhausting events from a photographer's standpoint. The 24/25 hour races certainly take their toll, especially if you can manage to stay awake through the whole thing, but the LBGP's wacky schedule and sheer number of races, qualifying sessions, and practice sessions crammed into three days is enough to make even the toughest photographer want to go puke in the bushes.… Read More

The Long Beach Grand Prix Course

Thursday, April 18th, 2013
gpcourse-4Street courses have always intrigued me. The sheer amount of planning and labor involved is absolutely mind-boggling. I took a trip down to Long Beach today to get a few shots of the in-between stages of the GP course. Like most street courses, they configure it in such a way that it can be opened to most regular traffic on days when there's no racing. gpcourse-1Read More

Life and Blasting in Las Vegas (Part 1)

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013
1763I was editing photos one day, and Larry Chen called me and asked, "Hey, since you have a baby now are you not going to be traveling as much?" and I replied, "Heck no, traveling is how I make money!" So then he asked if I'd want to go shoot the Mint 400 with him. Of course my answer was, "Mmm, really? Yeah, why not? Yeah." hollywood 206Read More

Rushed Beauty: Yosemite in 24 Hours

Tuesday, February 12th, 2013
yosemitefeb-1Bohan has been in my ear constantly for the past few months with pleas of making a trip to Yosemite in the winter. "Evvvveryone gets the same shots all summer, I want awesome ones with snow!" he says. Last Wednesday having just returned to the office from a different snowy expedition, I told Bohan that we should try to get the trip in soon before our schedules filled up. After a brief period of concentrated thought, we decided to leave that very night at midnight. This would allow us to catch a sunrise,… Read More

The Uff Da Shoppe

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013
uff da 001In the small town of Stanwood, located in northwest Washington between Seattle and the Canadian border, one can find an overwhelming Scandinavian presence. Aside from the Sons of Norway hall and street names like Lindstrom and Jensen, there are a number of quirkier indications of its early settlers' roots. One of the more obvious signs on the way through town is that of Viking Village, an old shopping plaza between the highway and Viking Way. One of the stores in Viking… Read More

25 Heures du Thunderhill

Thursday, December 20th, 2012
We've been anxiously awaiting this year's 25 Hours of Thunderhill, thinking of shots, going over ideas, planning, and waiting. But then sometimes the unexpected happens. Just a week or so before North America's longest endurance race was set to start, Geoff got a call from NASA Race Director Jeff Mohler, to see if he'd be interested in flying to Willows with him in a Cessna. Of course Geoff wanted to do that, but he also arranged for Jeff to give Joe and me an aerial… Read More

The Road Less Traveled

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012
Formula DRIFT Irwindale is upon us, and because it's the last round of the season, we wanted to do something extra special. As you may already know, we travel to FD Las Vegas we take the extra-long route through Yosemite's Tioga Pass to celebrate where we birthed the idea for Life Blasters, so in similar fashion we decided to take the scenic route to Southern California. Our story begins shortly after dawn at Fort Point, near the southern landing of the Golden Gate Bridge. Our goal was to travel… Read More
