I made my way back to the track and got there just in time for the first time attack session of the day. The racing surface had dried out and I finally got to see Chris Rado’s new TC. I’m actually surprised they haven’t banned the ridiculous front wing yet. I guess no one has complained about it yet, so he got to leave it on and set the Unlimited FF class record at 1:45.116.
Oh cool, a Sileighty! Matt “Hollywood” Guiver came all the way from Utah to run the Unlimited RWD S13 to a P3 1:50.780 before popping his engine during the second session.
Wilbur Faules took this ratty M3 to P2 with a 1:46.116.
MBO’s Pete Bovenburg set a new Limited FF class record of 1:51.964 in his Civic Si.
Luke knocked 5 seconds off yesterday’s time and finished the first session with a 1:53.
Back in the paddock, I got to check out the Formula Mazdas up close. They are so rad! Nothing janky on these guys at all.
To keep things organized, they pregrid in the paddock so they enter the hot pits in the correct order.
I found Will Roegge at Rado’s trailer.
This Evo VII is awesome. No, really. It is. It helped Daniel O’Donnell set a Street AWD record with a 1:47.648.
Luke got his time down to 1:51 in the second session.
The big story of the day was of course Tyler McQuarrie and the FXMD NSX. He set the Buttonwillow record last weekend at Super Lap Battle with a 1:40.980, and was aiming at the same goal here. It seemed probable, since this is his home track and everything.
Tony Szrika snatched P2 in Unlimited AWD with a 1:47.367 in his Evo VIII. That’s O’Donnell in the Professional Awesome Evo behind him.
Break time again. I passed the time by watching the Formula Mazdas spout flames as they decelerated into Turn 4.
They were a lot more aggressive than yesterday too. I guess dry pavement will do that. And maybe because this was an actual race.
Luke was almost out of tires but this was the last session, so it was time to go big or go home. After getting down to 1:51 in the second session, he wanted to break into the 1:40’s.
Jeff Westphal set the new Unlimited AWD class record of 1:37.058 in the GST Impreza.
Luke was monitoring his laptimes with his own transponder, so when he took the Corvette across the finish line with a Limited RWD class record of 1:49.689, he decided it was drift time.
Larry: “This would have been the best drift photo of 2010, but you missed it.”
Me: “I can save it.”
Luke: “Whoa, what car is that? Is it a Prius?”
Melissa: “It’s 2011”
Larry: “So good it would go back in time.”
Me: “I’m gonna post it anyway.”
Tyler got his goal. He now holds the Infineon track record with a 1:34.564. Way to go Tyler!
