ThunderDrift’s Super-Am is a series of single-run skidpad drifting competitions designed to get drivers ready for ProAm. It’s not a requirement for ProAm, just a way for newer drivers to see how they fare in a low-risk competition environment. There’s even a 2-event cap on the number of previous competitions a driver has been to, to keep the playing field level.
The season is formatted more like field sports, in that there’s a regular season that is used as qualifying for the post season. The top four unseeded drivers from each of the four regular rounds are seeded into the fifth and final round, and points gathered throughout the season are used to order those final 16 drivers. The final round is tandem too, which will be many of these drivers’ first experience with it. ProAm driver Josh McGuire brought his car out for tandem practice, but had to let Sean Hoover borrow it when Sean’s motor popped!
Josh got it back later in the day for tandeming with old schooler Paul Valmores.
As a throwback to the 2009 Season, Geoff decided to have a bra-snatch at the initiation point. Ryan Kado hooked it on his GoPro in 2009 but no one got it this time. The bra is even Life Blasters colors!
Keith Gevas learned how to understeer pretty easily.
That’s more like it. Good enough for 4th place.
Cory Lent snuck past Keith and got the 3rd spot.
Like Gevas, Doug English played it smart last season. He drove in Super-Am, but not at enough rounds to disqualify himself from this season. In a tough final battle with only one point separating the two drivers, he finished second.
ProAm drivers Gabe Stone, Jason Bostrom, and Aaron Conklin were the judges. Conklin took some time off from calculating scores to throw up some LB love!
Who’s this guy? It’s Dustin Jenks, super concentrated!
Atta boy, drifting into first place. But the bra still went unclaimed.
Doug didn’t seem too bummed about his second place finish. At least he had a cool Jimmy Up shirt on.
I don’t know who this dude is, but he’s cool.
This dude is cool too. Haha!
Even the judges got to play around after the comp was over. Aaron got to drift Gabe’s Camaro for a few laps. He said it was a little bit different from his FC.
You don’t say!
