Since around January, Drew and I have been planning to go to a blues show in SF with my Mom. Thursday before the show, Drew calls me and tells me he can’t make it because Luke Lonberger has an opportunity to test-drift his 2011 Formula DRIFT car at Willow Springs the same day. After a lot of considering I ended up tagging along, which sounds like a small feat, but brother, it wasn’t.

I started out my voyage leaving my home town and driving to meet Drew at Lab17 in Hayward. 185 miles. Then, around 9:00pm we hit the road for SoCal and arrived at WSIR around 3:00am. 342 miles. Slept in Drew’s camry outside the gates.

We were on a super tight schedule, so we got up at 6:30am and entered the raceway where we met up with Luke and some other members of the Blu808 crew. Here’s Luke interviewing Nick, Redline Time Attack’s head honcho, for a spot in the final episode of the Blu808 Corvette Build video series.

While Luke prepared and Drew shot video, I snuck away with Drew’s new 300mm F2.8 IS to play. This is a REALLY far away shot, and it still came out crisp! IS is a dream, wish I had it.

Shoot with the sun in front of you? Sure, why not!? Larry Chen thinks it’s cool…

Luke was going to test the car on WSIR’s Streets of Willow course, but there was another car group testing so we moved the operation to WSIR’s legendary Horse Thief Mile.

While Luke was setting up at HTM, our OMGdrift friends Ross Fairfield and Drew Fishbein showed up to help Drew capture footage for Episode 6.

Before too long, our favorite guy in the whole wide world, Larry Chen showed up too! He was planning to shoot the Redline Time Attack event on the big track to help shake off the off-season cobwebs before FD Long Beach next month, but ended up hanging out with us for a while.

“Let me see! Let me see!”
Ross Fairfield grabbed my camera and took a few shots while I wasn’t looking. lol.

Way to shamelessly self-promote, Ross. Look at Fishbein, he’s all blurry! 🙁

Well, might as well throw this one in since we’re promoting ourselves. Nice shot, Ross! Thanks!

Luke was on and off the track quite a bit solving minor technical issues with the ‘vette. When he pitted, all of us photogs gathered up in the middle of the track and turned into complete kids. It was like a camera war.

See? Absolutely ridiculous. haha.

Wiring guru Jeff Jordan stopped by the track to tell us how knowledgeable and handsome he is. Oh, did you know he’s got a Gixxer too?

Here ya go, Jeff. How often is it that you get to drive a truck around HTM? This thing looks right at home here, just needs more angle…

If you didn’t already know, Jeff is responsible for all of the wiring on Luke’s Corvette, as well as many other notable FD cars including Conrad Grunewald’s Camaro, Matt Powers’ S14, and the Z4 M-Coupe Mike Essa is building just to name a few.

After much discussion with Drew, I think Larry is going to switch from his clunky old 1D+400mm combo to Drew’s modern, stylish 7D+300mm combo. You heard it here first, Ladies and Gents.

Here’s my personal favorite of the day. That ‘vette can REALLY lay out some smoke, and the exhaust note is a thing of beauty. Keep your eyes on this one in 2011 folks, I’m sure it’ll be one to watch.

We hit the road for NorCal at around 1:00pm, and made it to San Francisco to the blues show at 8:30pm with not a moment to spare. 374 miles.

With all that driving, I covered around 900 miles in just over 24hrs. That’s 15hrs driving, and 9hrs doing other stuff. Whew!
I snapped this picture on the drive home. I swear, this building looks like it belongs on mars.
