A long time ago I met a kid who drove a Scion TC; that kid is Siam Chautavipat. Since then he has upgraded and graduated, making a name for himself in the Northwest going from stock 240’s, to a Super Made coupe, to this 400+ horsepower beast that we were prepping to get painted over the weekend.
The night before we got most of the car prepped starting with removing all the main body panels. While some of us sanded the car, others helped prep the hood, kit and door jambs to be sprayed by Galen that night. Though I booked it around 1am, they were said to be there until 5am. This photo was taken around 11am, so that gives you an idea of the little amount of sleep Galen gets before spraying a car…
I never really thought about how much went into paint and getting the right color. Precise measurements and the exact codes are key for getting that color you see on the demo paint cards. We all kept working on sanding panels and doors while the paint was being mixed and shook.
Though we should be working on his car, Siam hasn’t had track time in quite some time due to building this car. Needless to say we had to have a BMX drift competition. If he hits the track like he did with the bike we may have yet another NW Formula D driver on our hands. Well I wouldn’t go that far with it quite yet.
Got to love a classic…even if it got rear-ended so hard that the entire front end was destroyed as well. A 1965 fastback is still a 1965 fastback in my heart. Eleanor would have been cooler…just saying.
Galen brought these beauties out. There’s a little surprise thrown in the paint, if you can’t guess from that then SPOILER ALERT: there is extra flake thrown in the lip and aero to give it a little more shine.
After the parts came out, the car went under the knife, it was time. Of course for us that meant hanging out around the shop while Galen did work. Siam was testing out just how hard the air gun could blow, receiving his first blow…well you get the idea. As you can tell he wasn’t expecting that much air.
Siam patiently waits and watches as his car goes for coat #2 of the base color. We could hardly wait to see this as it was getting later and later.
It had become dark out, and the paint had set enough for me to run in and grab a couple quick pictures before he sprayed the final spray, the clear coat. We were 15 minutes and then baking the car away before it was complete…
And of course as luck would have it, we ran out of the hardener for the clear coat with needing about 50% more of the cup. This was devastating due to the fact that if we could not get more within a certain amount of time the car would have to be re-sanded down and resprayed as the paint would not set right.
Luckily we managed to find enough to finish the car, Galen sprayed the rest, turned on the bake for the car to sit in and shut everything down. Though I am dying to show you all the final product, the owner decided it would be best if that was kept hidden until his wheels are on and the car is actually together. I will be shooting it the day that happens.
I headed home, cooked up some steaks and corn and called it a day.
